What specifically applies in the canton of Bern
A carport is a structure: it takes up space, often stands close to the boundary or road and needs a building permit almost everywhere. With solar panels on the roof (solar carport), design requirements and registration with the grid operator are added.
Permit-free in the canton of Bern: unheated small structures up to 10 m² footprint and 2.5 m height that are neither lived in nor used commercially and functionally belong to a main building are permit-free (Art. 6 para. 1 let. a BewD).
