How long does the municipality take?

No uniform processing time for all of Switzerland can be derived from this. The completeness check, notification or ordinary procedure, cantonal specialist offices and objections all affect the process. Your municipality's procedural information is more useful for planning than a blanket duration for all building projects.

The city of Winterthur, for example, distinguishes between the preliminary review and the subsequent procedural deadlines. This information applies to the process described there and cannot be transferred unchanged to other municipalities. Official explanation by the city of Winterthur.

These points can take extra time

  • Missing or contradictory plan dimensions, signatures and attachments.
  • Additional technical evidence requested or clarifications on protection status.
  • Changes to the project during the review.
  • Publication, objections and further procedural steps.

The canton of Zurich describes the submission documents and the permit procedure on its official procedure page. For other locations, use the regions overview.

Have you already received a letter with a deadline?

State the date and send the complete letter with your enquiry. A request for an extension or an acknowledgement of receipt does not automatically extend the deadline; the competent office decides on any extension. How to proceed with a retrospective building application.

Frequently asked questions about timing

How long does a building application take?

Preparing the application file, signatures, submission and the authority's permit procedure are separate steps. The duration of the authority's procedure depends on factors such as the procedure, completeness, specialist offices involved and objections.

Does an application file in five working days also mean a permit in five days?

No. Our five working days refer to the minor building application file after receipt of payment and all the necessary documents. The authority's review starts afterwards, or after formal submission, and follows the applicable procedure.

What can delay processing?

Missing plans or signatures, additional technical evidence, project changes and objections can trigger further steps. The competent building authority can tell you the status of the procedure and any open points for your application.
