Is my roof suitable for solar?

Enter your address and see in seconds what your roof can deliver. With official federal data, the permit question for your canton and a quote from our solar partner.

How we calculate

For each roof surface of your building, the federal government provides annual solar irradiation, area, pitch and orientation. This gives a suitability rating from “Low” to “Excellent”.

We only count surfaces rated «Good» or better and from 10 m². Of these, we realistically cover 70 % with modules, 60 % on flat roofs. With 210 watts per m² and 20 % system losses, this gives the output and annual yield. The calculation is deliberately conservative.

Permit and installation from a single source

We check whether a notification is enough for your installation or a building application is needed, and we handle both. On request, we put you in touch with a vetted solar installer in your region who quotes based on your analysis.

Questions and answers

Where does the data come from?

From the Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE). It has calculated for every building in Switzerland how much sun falls on each roof surface (sonnendach.ch). We query this open data directly from the federal geoportal. Nothing is stored.

How accurate is the calculation?

The solar irradiation per roof surface is precise. Output, yield and costs are guide values: we calculate with 70 % usable area (flat roof 60 %), 210 watts per m² of module area and 20 % system losses. Chimneys, roof windows, structural aspects and your electricity consumption are only factored into the installer's quote.

Do I need a permit for a solar installation?

Usually not. Under Art. 18a RPG, sufficiently adapted roof and façade systems only need to be notified to the municipality. A building permit is required in core zones and townscape protection areas, on protected buildings, for free-standing systems and for solar carports. We check this for your plot and handle the notification or application.

Why get a quote through baubewilligt.ch?

Because we take care of the notification or building application, the installer no longer has to deal with checks and paperwork with the authorities. This makes the quote leaner and more binding. You have one contact for permit and installation. The referral is free and without obligation for you.

How much does a solar installation on a detached house cost?

As a rough guide before subsidies: for small installations up to 10 kWp, around CHF 2'400 to 3'200 per kWp, and less per kWp for larger installations. Pronovo's one-off remuneration is deducted, plus other contributions depending on the canton and municipality. In many cantons, the investment costs are deductible from taxable income.
